SPAQuE participates in the European Territorial Cooperation programme INTERREG

As part of the INTERREG North-West Europe programme 2014-2020, SPAQuE is involved in two projects, one as the lead and the other as a partner.

 

SPAQuE is participating in the new Cooperation programme INTERREG North-West Europe 2014-2020, implemented by the EU. This programme is aimed at all public and private bodies in the eight countries concerned (Belgium, France (North-East region), Germany (South-West region), Ireland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom).

 

Sustainable development at the heart of the programme

The INTERREG North-West Europe programme is one of instruments of the European Cohesion Policy. It is aimed at optimising territorial cooperation between the key actors in these eight countries in order to reduce imbalances between the regions. The goal is to contribute to the economic competitiveness of North-West Europe, while encouraging sustainable and balanced development at regional level.

The three major themes of the 2014-2020 programme are: innovation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and effective use of resources and raw materials. This last theme in particular concerns SPAQuE, which is participating in these two projects. 

 

"RAWFILL" or waste recovery

As the project lead, SPAQuE has submitted the "RAWFILL" project (Raw materials recovered from landfills). This project concerns the recovery of former waste with a view to recovering various materials (metals, organic and mineral materials) as well as energy. The aim is to develop a methodology for evaluating the economic potential of this waste, whether it is from the public or industrial domain.

In order to successfully implement this project, several public and private partnerships in Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and Germany have joined forces.

 

"Greening Brownfields" and the restoration of abandoned industrial sites

As a partner, on this occasion, SPAQuE is participating in the "Greening Brownfields" project, led by the Centre Wallon de Recherche Agricole (Walloon Centre for Agricultural Research). This project, which also involves research centres, universities and public and private actors in Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is aimed at promoting the restoration of brownfield land in order to produce clean biomass that can be used in an innovative circular economy.

Perennial and annual crops will therefore be grown on four types of brownfield land (polluted, restored, rubbish tips and military land). The economic, social (well-being, health, landscape) and environmental outcomes will then be evaluated in relation to the resistance and longevity of the crops.
